The black trouser

Updated: Nov 24, 2019

Working in an office doesn't have to mean sacrificing your sense of style. In this series I'll write about the four current staple pieces in my wardrobe that make me feel put together and confident at work. In this second post in the series, I focus on black trousers.

Tailored black trousers are synonymous with office wear. There are lots of black trousers available on the high street and it can be overwhelming to know where to start when looking for the perfect pair. The cotton linen trousers I'm wearing in the above image are the Novara trousers by Totême and I bought them in their summer sale last month. The trousers are described as a straight leg however they have a curved shape due to the twisted seam stitching. It's small tweaks like these to tailored trousers that make them feel more current.

Curved shaped trousers have become more popular over the past few years with brands like Whistles introducing their popular barrel leg jeans. I was skeptical until I tried the Novara trousers. The shape is surprisingly leg lengthening and deceptively flattering. An added bonus is that these trousers aren't tight on your thighs which makes them more comfortable for a day at the office. This style of trousers also look good with flat sandals for a more casual look.

As an alternative to the Novara trousers, the Topshop Casual Peg trousers are great. I have them in khaki and they're a firm favourite of mine. I wear them with the hem rolled down and the waist cinched with a belt. The Uniqlo U Curved trousers have a similar shape to the Novara trousers with a wider leg.
